NDT can be applied to product design, material selection, processing and manufacturing, finished product inspection, inspection of service (maintenance) and other aspects, which can be optimized for quality control and cost reduction. NDT also helps ensure the safe operation and/or effective use of products. NDT contains many kinds of method can effectively used, is the most commonly used NDT methods: radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing, magnetic particle testing, penetrant testing, visual detection, leak detection, and emission testing, X-ray perspective testing, etc.
Since various NDT methods have their own scope and limitations, the new NDT method has been developed and applied continuously. In general, any physical, chemical, or other possible technical means may be developed into an NDT method, as long as the basic definitions of NDT are met.
In our country, the word nondestructive testing the earliest known as inspection or nondestructive flaw detection, the different methods are also known as inspection, such as X-ray detector, ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, penetration testing, and so on. This method is widely circulated and has been used to this day, and its utilization rate is no less than that of NDT.
In foreign countries, the English word for nondestructive testing is not identical except that the first part of the word, non-destructive, is the same, and the subsequent parts are written in different ways. Such as Japan's habit of writing inspection, many European countries used to writing flaw detection, unified use testing now, the United States in addition to also use testing, seems to prefer writing examination and evaluation. These words with the first half, the form of abbreviations, respectively is NDI, NDT and NDE, translated into Chinese in nondestructive flaw detection, nondestructive inspection, nondestructive inspection, nondestructive inspection, nondestructive testing, nondestructive evaluation form and write different terms. In fact, these different English and their corresponding Chinese terms have the same meaning and are synonymous. Nondestructive testing for this, the international organization for standardization technical committee (ISO/TC 135) formulated and issued a new international standard (ISO/TS 18173:18173), to these different forms and unified term writing, clearly they are a same definition of the term, are synonyms, which are equivalent to NDT (Non - destructive testing). And different ways of writing, just because of different language habits.
